Unit Awards

Summary:  VMB-614 was commissioned on 1 October 1943 at Cherry Point, NC.  The squadron operated there and at Boca Chica, FL, where they received torpedo and tactical training.  In early August 1944 the squadron moved to Newport, AR for final training in preparation for deployment.  From Newport, the flight echelon flew to Alameda, then departed on 25 July 1945, arriving at Ewa on 1 August 1945.  The ground echelon departed San Diego in early August 1945 and by 31 August 1945 both echelons were operating at Midway—just as the war ended.  VMB-614 was decommissioned at Miramar, CA on 28 December 1945 following the squadron's return to the United States.
