TRAINING HOP: A pair of VMB-614 PBJ on a training hop over an unidentified location.  Early in training, VMB-614 utilized PBJ-1Cs and PBJ-1Ds as seen above.

TRAINING HOP: Another VMB-614 on an early training hop.  This particular aircraft is MB-184, Bureau Number 35184.  This aircraft was identified by the aircraft's number which was temporarily applied with chalk and is barely visible on the nose just below the bombardier's station.

Takeoff

TAKEOFF: A VMB-614 PBJ running on full power departs an unidentified stateside location.  A close examination of this photo reveals many other PBJs parked along the runway and a hangar in the background marked with "Production Maintenance."

Training Hop

TRAINING HOP: A flight of five VMB-614 PBJs on a training hop over an unidentified location in the United States.  Notice that the second PBJ from the right appears to be pained in an overall midnight-blue finish.

Right Echelon

RIGHT ECHELON: The flight in the above photo then forms up into a tight right echelon.  All of these aircraft are the J-model PBJ, recognizable by the Plexiglas nose and the upper turret located just aft of the pilot's station.

Formation Flying

FORMATION FLYING: A third photograph of this same group of aircraft illustrates how the formation is 'stepped-up" off the lead aircraft.  Note that all aircraft have a radome on the starboard wingtip in which the AN-APS-3 search radar was housed.

Sailboat

SAILBOAT: This sailboat was constructed on Midway Island by members of VMB-614 with building materials that were "liberated" from various locations on the island.  Powered by a canvas sail, it was between 15 and 20 feet in length and undoubtedly provided squadron members with some enjoyment.
